Hey everyone. Two questions.

When did you get hit by that thought "Wow, I want to be an Ophthalmologist!"? Was it during med-school? before med-School when?

I'm jsut curious, because im in College, and i'm planning on getting into medical school. During high school when they made us do those "What do you want to be?" projects is when i first became interested in ophthalmology, and then i shadowed my ophthalmologist, and loved what I saw. As a junior in college, is it to early to know what I want to be?

I actually worked for an Ophthalmologist in College and fell in love with the profession! I think it's wonderful to know early on. Just do well in school and get into med school, and Keep an Open mind during third year. You may find you like something else better! For me, my mind didn't change post 3rd year Med School.

Good Luck! :luck:

i noticed most people from my medical school going into optho knew about it when they started medical school. I guess since it's so competitive, you might need that early motivation. Best wishes in future endeavors!

i actually didn't figure it out until my third year of med school. i went to college and entered med school thinking i was going to do peds or emergency. it wasn't until during my surgery rotation i realized how much i loved the OR but how much i hated the gen surg lifestyle and explored the fields.

I'm starting med school next year, but I've been interested in the eye for a while for research reasons (I myself am very near-sighted), even before I decided to apply to med school (originally planned for grad school). I didn't realize until just recently that it was a "lifestyle" specialty and so highly competitive, though. Sucks. Oh well, I'll try my best early on 🙂
