Hi,

I'm very interested in doing an MD/PHD but didn't plan on taking the MCAT until August 1st and sending in my applications immediately after I got my score in September.

I was just curious when you guys submitted your applications and for any September or later applicants out there, did you get interviews?

From my standpoint, an early September primary application isn't that late. Have your transcripts verified by AMCAS before the MCAT score returns so that's the only part of your application waiting except to add additional schools. Just have your secondaries completed ASAP. Have as much of them completed as you can even before the scores come back, such as individual school essays and the like.

That's great advice. I hope someone will post the secondary questions so I can have almost everything ready by then I am a total noob to the application process, so I didn't even know you could get your transcripts verified first.

Thanks!

I am applying MD/PhD this cycle and took the MCAT at the end of this past August. I did not want to apply until I got my score also, which wasn't until early September. With the turnaround for AMCAS verification at the prime of application season, my application was not verified and delivered to schools until mid-October.

Fortunately, some schools let you start secondaries before they receive a verified application from AMCAS. If I knew about SDN at the time, I would have searched the threads for secondary essay prompts and had them done beforehand so I could have just copied them into the supplementals. Taking 17 college credits and working half-time, I managed to have everything submitted for about 20 schools by the first week of November.

So far, I have been invited for interviews at almost half of these schools. Assuming that interviewing on the later side does not heavily weigh into the chances of being accepted, I think you will be fine!

What an accomplishment! Congrats. Good to know other late-applicants had success.

From a program director standpoint, you do reduce your chances if you take the MCAT any later than you intend. Compared to early applicants with similar academic achievements, it would be harder competition for the interview slots. Certainly my school has an early timeline but even schools that interview late start selecting candidates for interviews in Sep/Oct. If you take the late MCAT (i.e. 9/11 loaded in AMCAS on 10/12), it will be back until mid October. If you wait to submit until seeing the score, the application will take until late November (or later) to verify. You are only placing yourself at a disadvantage. If you are doing this plan, I would recommend taking the MCAT no later than early August (i.e.: 8/4 loaded in AMCAS on 9/5) as you are intending.

This. Don't be misled by the "deadlines." While the earlier poster had a 50% interview rate, without knowing more, this either is someone who should have had 100% or is just really lucky to get 50% and it not the norm. I submitted the last week of June and was told by my undergrad that the goal is no later than the end of July with waiting a year better than submitting after August. I was in your boat essentially and decided to just wait a year instead of submit so late initially.

Dang that seems pretty drastic. I hope it works out for you! I'll take that into account

While the earlier you submit your apps the better, there are a lot of factors that go into effect here- namely how strong of a candidate you are. During one of my last interviews (in Dec. at a top 10 school) I met people there for whom it was only their second interview- and they had 7-8 scheduled in January and February at other top 10 programs. They submitted their applications end of September/early October. So as you can see if you're a good applicant you'll get the invites- but regardless the chances of an interview decrease the later you submit.

It did...3 years ago. Had my first acceptance in October which is why I believe in the "urgency."

I am sort of confused by what you are saying. are you saying the last week of June is late, or that the first time around you were going to submit after August and waited until the next cycle and submitted in June.

The latter. I am saying that in summer 2008 I would have submitted after August (took MCAT august 2008) so I decided to wait until 2009 and submitted the last week of june 2009.

I figured I'd hijack this thread rather than create an entire new one.

I started on my science classes a little late because I was a liberal arts major in the beginning of my college career. I was wondering if it was feasible to take classes during the first summer session at my college which ends the 22 of June and then submitting immediately afterwards.

The MCAT will have already been taken care of, so everything would be ready around the 22nd. My pre health advisor kinda freaked me out a little and made it sound like you're screwed if you don't submit the second it opens.

You must have your application ready but can submit by:
  • late July - subtle decrease in success
  • late August - mild decrease in success
  • early September - moderate decrease in success
  • early October - major decrease in success
After each of unwritten deadlines, probabilities for success significantly diminish. Please also keep in mind that AMCAS takes up to 4-6 weeks to verify applications. My program has invited and accepted late October applicants but those applicants had more difficult odds...

For these deadlines, do you mean having it verified by late July or initially submitting it to AMCAS late July?
