When do I need to decide

K Guys,

I'm a third year and I was wondering when I should be figuring out what I want to go into. I am interested in most areas of medicine and would like to get through most of my rotations before I decide. However, I have heard that I should be scheduling audition rotations now. Is this true? Should I start making decisions soon?

I always feel behind the 8 ball on this sort of stuff....

I think you should begin to have a pretty good idea sometime next spring (march/april) since thats when you'll start to apply for away rotations. So you still have a little bit of time to decide what you want to do for the rest of your life.

Most away rotations don't start taking apps (even the popular programs) until February or March at the earliest.

VSAS may be what everyone uses next year, and that didn't open for apps until sometime in April.

I'd suggest keep looking at all the schools' websites in which you're interested for info about their aways and what sorts of additional info you might need. That helped me for looking up stuff for residencies too.

You've got time, however, if you're even considering one of the super competitive fields (Plastic, Derm, etc.) or even competitive ones that like a lot of aways/LORs (Ortho, ENT) consider applying to aways.

This is especially true if you're trying to decide between doing ENT or Pediatrics. It's better to default to the "harder" to match in because it's better have done the aways/got the LORS and not need them them as opposed to needing them and not having them.
