When do I take Step 2?

Hi,
I was wondering when people normally take Step 2- after their 3rd year, during the 4th, or after the 4th?

Ranges from end of 3rd to end of 4th. Some residencies want the scores before ranking you, so if your residency programs of choice want it in before match, better take it by the beginning of your 4th.

I took Step 2 spring of my 4th year.

How common is it for residencies to require step 2 prior to ranking?

Is this requirement generally made apparent up front?
