When do schools normally hand out acceptances?

Title pretty much says it all. When do school normally hand out acceptances?

If I'm not mistaken, I've read on schools websites that they start handing out decisions as early as December 30th.

However, I have also seen numerous people get accepted 2-3 days after their interview, 2-3 months BEFORE that December 30th date.

Is there a general rule, or can you get accepted pretty much at anytime.

Schools made a pact to hand out interviews, at the earliest, on December 1st, or the Friday before the 1st if the 1st landed on a weekend.
