When do scribes start getting hired?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
or alternatively when do people who are matriculating to medical school quit their scribe jobs? Any rhyme or reason to openings?
It's all pretty random I'm sure. People leave before going to med school, but the when varies.
You might as well apply now, so you can get your foot in the door when there are openings, if there aren't any already. Turnover is so high with scribes as it is, I wouldn't be too worried.

Most of the turnover with our group happens at the beginning of the summer months (like May/June).

There is usually an increase in hiring at end/beginning of a semester/term due to people moving/new classes/etc, so Dec/Jan and May/June. Hiring really depends on your location. If you're in an area with lots of pre-med type students like Boston or New York, it's pretty tough to find a job so those months I referenced earlier would probably be the times when most people are hired. If you're not in that type of area, then hiring can happen at any time. Where I'm working (pacific NW), my place is starving for more scribes because it's a relatively rural hospital. It all really depends on your location.

to give you an idea on the east coast- applied august, heard back september, interviewed october, site placement in november, online training november-december, clinical training january. So it took over 6 months to actually step foot in the clinic. The process is time consuming and if you're only realistically going to be there for like 2 months before leaving for school I would say it's a waste of time. If you've got at least one-two years, I'd say go for it. You also don't want to piss people off because they spend time/money training you, and leaving after only being in the clinic (scribing on your own) for 3 months is distasteful. Remember, then they have to go search for someone else to take your spot and thats another 3-6 months of their time. Most quit 2-3 months before matriculating to travel.

I'm one of the managing scribes at my hospital site. We have people leaving all the time for various reasons, not just medical school. I would just keep an eye out and check in here and there to see if hospitals near you are hiring. If they are like me, they will like the initiative and keep you on a short list for hiring. Hope this helps.
