When do you ask for deferral?

Does anyone know what's the last appropriate month to ask a school for deferral?
Do you do it before or after you get your financial aid package from the school?

I don't want to miss the window, if there is one.

i think as soon as you know you are going to need/want it, you should start talking to the school about the process

Double-check your acceptance letter--often, there's something in there regarding deferral requests. I don't think there's one particular date that's standard--I think it depends on the school. I asked for a deferral last year from multiple places (to help me decide on schools--if the school would not grant me a deferral, I probably wasn't going to attend), and the deadlines varied. Most of them were mid-April up to May 15. Good luck--deferral policies differ at each school--some grant them to almost anyone who requests one, some only let you defer for a couple specific reasons.
