if i want to get my app in asap, what date should i give me recommendation writers as a deadline?

are the recs due with the primary app or secondary app?

i hear the primary app opens may 4th. when can you first turn it in? and is there a lag time before it gets sent?

Give the writers a reasonable amount of time to put a letter together 2-4 weeks, but make sure you give them a firm deadline. It is better to have the letters at your letter collection service sooner than later.

Early June, usually June 1, AMCAS is open for submission. Verification of your application / transcripts takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. The primary application isn't really sent to anyone, it is all internet based and once your application is complete and verified the schools you applied to can download your application. When individual schools receive your primary application is dependent on how often they download complete applications from AMCAS (some do it daily, some do it weekly, etc).

I agree with the other posters in that you should give the letter writer at least 3-4 weeks. If you try to crunch them for time, it's possible that the letter you get won't be the very best they could write.

Most schools now participate in the AMCAS letter of recommendation process wherein all your letters are sent to AMCAS (electronically or by paper) and then you distribute the letters to the schools of your choice. You can submit your primary application without completing any of the LOR section without a penalty (i.e. you won't be put at the beginning of the "verification line" if you resubmit b/c you added LORs after you initially submitted). That being said, most schools will NOT review your file until they have LORs in their possession.

The primary application may open for your editing in early May, but you cannot actually submit it until June 1st. After you submit your primary application, you will need to be verified by AMCAS (so send your transcripts right away, because they'll need these) which can take anywhere from a day (if you submit on June 1) to a few weeks (if you submit on July 1). Schools don't typically start reviewing any primary applications until early-mid July.
