Hello everyone.

When does the general medical school application come out? What about the supplements?
When can you actually start sending applications in?
I have taken the MCAT, but would like to retake and signed up for the June 18th date. Will this be too late?
What time period is a good time to apply (June-Aug?)?
When is the absolute latest date to send applications in?

You can start your general app (amcas) in may and submit in june. Secondaries in july/august/sept. Interviews sept/oct/nov.

This is the ideal schedule I would say. You can apply later, but you'll be later in the application cycle. For me, I started this cycle 15 months before what will actually be my first day of medschool.

Jeez, that seems like a long time.

as early as possible, I feel like I started too late. I got my app completed mid November (LOR's and all) and I think it hurt my chances. The earlier you complete your app the sooner AdCOM's can start looking at you (good thing).

And to answer the other question, no, you can't do secondaries at the same time. You have to get your primary in and approved, then individual schools will decide when (or if) you will get their schoolsspecific secondary.

I think you can send transcripts as soon as it opens but can't submit the actual rest of the app until the date in June.

To expand upon that point, secondaries from schools will come with their own set of essays or some with no essays and differing app. fees. However, each individual school will decide whether or not they want to give one to you.

Many schools will screen an initial prescreening based on MCAT and GPA reqs and many will give without screening. Just depends on the school. I'd strongly suggest buying an MSAR to see which ones do and don't and to find out averages etc.


If you are done with your PS and have your stuff together so that you can just cut and paste it into your app, and really want to look at secondary prompts, you may go to the thread stickied in this preallo section which has links to the secondary threads or go to the secondary thread subforum directly. The prompts are on the first post of each individual secondary thread. So you can start thinking about them.

Do you pay for secondaries as soon as your primaries are verified? Or do you pay for secondaries when you complete and send them in? I'm also taking my MCAT in June so will likely have a list of schools I want to send secondaries to. Once I receive my scores in mid July, is it too late to back-out of certain secondaries without paying, or will I have paid prior to receiving the secondaries?

Most schools will require that you pay at the time of submitting your Secondary app. Only 2 schools I know ask for the payment prior to actually sending the secondary. They are as follows: MSU-CHM and Loyola (both in the midwest).

However, in most cases you will pay the fee they ask after you've filled out the app and hit submit. That will be the last step in submission
