Hi guys,

Im going to be an M1 in August at RWJ, and I was wondering when students at that school (or other schools) take shelf exams? Do you take them after you complete a subject? or is there a period at the end of the year when all you do is take these exams?

Thanks!!!

Typically you take shelf exams at the end of the course. It would be tough to take an exam that is pretty cumulative without covering all the material first. Just keep in mind that some questions may seem tough because they at times require knowledge of other subjects. however, considering the shelf exams are standardized and curved, everyone in your class will be in the same situation and the lack of extra knowledge won't affect your scores

Oh I see. And there are basically shelf exams in every subject? Anatomy, phys, path, etc?

whether or not you take a shelf for a class depends on the course instructors and the school. You can check the NBME site to see what subjects have shelf exams and the breakdown of them.
