When does 2008 AMCAS open?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It opens May 1st but you can't submit until June 1st.

You can submit it on June 1st (usually), but this date may be delayed by a few days due to the fact that AMCAS may need to work out a few "bugs" before giving the ok.

I think that even though it opens June 1 you can still request your transcripts be sent in before that.. is that correct? I can't remember now..

They start collecting transcripts May 1. So send them in May 1st... be complete by June 1st and be prepared for an influx of secondaries.

I can't believe this was almost a year ago for me...

Are you allowed to send in an update of your college transcript? Can you send in the transcripts even if you haven't taken the MCAT yet?

I know I'm not applying for another 2 yrs but I'd like to know now so I can plan out my schedule the right way. (I know I know I have no life) I planned to take it (the MCAT) may of my junior year. Does anyone know how long it takes for the new MCAT scores to be mailed to your house? I noticed a lot of ppl think applying in July is risky and I don't want to be caught late. So I wanted to know if April or May is the best time to take the MCAT.

Can you apply for 2008 if you're waitlisted at schools for 2007?

By the time you take the MCAT, it should be within 2-3 weeks for scores. Your AMCAS is not dependent on MCAT scores to be verified. You just need to MARK when you are taking the MCAT. However, your secondary applications will not be complete until you have your scores in.

So basically, when you do apply, get your transcripts in and apply early. First thing first though, Get good grades, get a decent MCAT, and get some GREAT experiences in college. I think everyone here can tell you that numbers aren't everything.

As soon as it opens, I can start applying to schools for 2008 admission right?

I believe it opens in mid-May, but you cannot submit until June 1

Thanks for the advice. I'm trying to get some experience starting this semester shadowing. I hope to research this summer also. I'll definitely take everything you said into consideration.

Can you apply for 2008 if you're waitlisted at schools for 2007?

Good advice I've heard from the 2006 cycle is that if you're waitlisted, apply to just one school initially. Your AMCAS will then be processed which takes somewhere between 2 weeks -> 1 month. Afterwards, if you still haven't gotten off a waitlist, you can add more schools instantaneously. This can save you a lot of money if you actually get off a waitlist, and wastes virtually no time.

That is spectacular advice!!
Would you change your personal statement in this case?

So if you are on a quarter system and grades dont come out till mid June, should you still apply June 1st? Or should you wait 3 weeks untill your spring quarter grades come out?

Two questions
1. If my grades don't come out until May 8 shouldn't I wait and request transcripts until after the spring semester is finished?

2. Is is possible to update the transcript or is it that once you submit your transcript your grades are pretty much set for that cycle. I am asking because I will be taking summer classes as well.

For question #2, IIRC you cannot send updated transcripts to AMCAS. However, you can send updated transcripts to your individual schools. I took summer courses, too, and just send those summer transcripts to my schools. In some cases, schools' websites said something like "don't send us anything else in the mail". In that case I just emailed the admissions offices with the new grades and said that I would certainly send a hard copy if they wanted me to. None did. :luck:
