I plan on working overseas for a few months and I am unsure of when I would need to return to apply to get my loan to start medical school. Unless I get aid, I would depend 100% on federal student loans. Also, how long does the process of applying and receiving take?

You can start filing your fafsa application online starting October 1st every year.

I have already filled FAFSA out, thankfully. Is there anything else I need to do before I leave/when I return?
That's all you need for federal loans. Unless you think you're going to need private loans, only then you'd need to shop around. Usually, federal loans will cover the full cost of attendance (including tuition and living expenses) at your school.
