So I graduated recently, I have my California PT license now, and I've been interviewing at clinics. One owner of an outpatient ortho clinic I interviewed at a few days ago asked me if I would be able to start working right away, and I pretty much said yes. He also asked me if I was good to go with everything, e.g. if I have my PT license and NPI and all that. I said I have my PT license but not an NPI. He told me I should get started on applying for an NPI, and that he would let me know of a hiring decision by this week (I think he had interviewed at least one other person, and he is also going to be calling my references).
My question is when exactly am I supposed to apply for an NPI? Isn't it supposed to be once I'm hired? Because my friend's PT clinic he works at took care of getting his NPI for him. (And what do you guys think? Does it sound like this potential employer will likely hire me since he told me to get an NPI?) I'm confused because I started the online application, and it asks for my mailing address and a practice location address. I'm not practicing anywhere, and I haven't been hired at this clinic, so I don't want to put the clinic's address for the practice location. I was thinking of putting my mailing address, but the website says not to put my mailing address as the practice location address unless I am also practicing there.
I was thinking of applying for an NPI and just putting my mailing address as the practice location address, and changing it later on, just to get my NPI quicker. Or I could just wait until this potential employer tells me if I got the job and then apply for an NPI from there. What do you guys recommend?
