I'm wondering when the best time would be to begin this.

When I transfer to a university, I should be in my sophomore year I believe. Would that be the best time? Would it be prudent for me to immediately look into research, shadowing opportunities, and see about volunteering/doing extra-curriculars/etc. (I'm guessing martial arts could count for EC?)

Yes, it would probably be a very good idea to look into these activities as soon as you can.

Yes. It's always better to have options. Research opportunities aren't always there and furthermore doing research takes time so the earlier the better. You don't have to do all the EC stuff at once after transferring. Make sure your grades work out, then pick and choose what you can handle/enjoy.

Sooner the better i suppose. I started volunteering summer after HS to 2nd semester sophomore year. Then summer of sophomore year (im a junior now) i started lab research and stopped volunteering. Have not done any shadowing yet probably get on that summer before senior year or this winter.

But the good thing is you still have time =)

The earlier you start, the better. Also, consistency is key.
