When should I register for DAT?

I wanted to take my DAT some time this summer. I will probably take it end of July or so.

Anyway, having said that when should I register for the DAT? Is there a particular period of time that I have to register by in order to take the DAT when I want to?

You should schedule your DAT date AT LEAST one month in advance.

You can find all registration materials online at the ADA DAT testing website: http://www.ada.org/prof/ed/testing/dat/index.asp


Once you register with the ADA, Prometric will send you a confirmation paper and ask you to call them at a special phone number. Upon calling, you will be able to set a test date. You have one year to schedule a test date, so if you know you are for sure going to take the DAT, then it doesn't hurt to register anytime.

The only caveat to this is that you must choose the schools you want your DAT scores mailed to when you are registering with the ADA. This stinks in some ways, because after seeing your scores you may want to apply to other schools or scratch other schools off your list.

This doesn't mean you are only restricted in sending the DAT scores to the schools that you've specified on the DAT application. You are allow to send your scores to more schools for additional fee (I believe it's $15/school). Processing time is approximately 3 weeks.

That's true. I still think it's stupid that students have to decide where to send scores when registering--they ought to be able to do it at the testing center or within a week after taking their exam.

I, for example, registered for the exam 7 months before I took it. In that seven months the ideas of where I ought to apply changed drastically, and nearly none of my original schools were on my final list of schools I wanted to apply to. $15 a school can add up when you are choosing 8 or 9 new schools.

I guess this demonstrate nicly the 'ecomonics of dentistry'! They assume that since most of us who apply will get into dental school and 4 years later be earning big bucks, so the AADSAS application centre, dental schools and ADA (DAT, NBDE) have decided that they will suck as much money from us now while they have the capacity to do so!😀
