when the heck are poor people that are studying for the august mcat supposed to apply to med schools? people are tellin me that ideally i should be havin my secondaires filled out by sept/oct. im not planning on doing my primary till after i take the mcats in august.

what gives. why so freekin early?? im probably not even gonna get my secondaries until after september. 😕

Well, since the majority of schools have rolling admissions policies, you are at a *serious* detriment to apply late.

I STRONGLY advise you to at least get your AMCAS app ASAP (before the MCAT).

You decrease your chances of admission by waiting to submit your application. You have to remember that although AMCAS is electronic, it still takes a while to get out to all the schools, and many won't even look at your application before MCAT scores come in. Therefore, get your AMCAS in, take the test, and wait for secondaries. Do this NOW!

You should definitely get your AMCAS in NOW! Send your transcripts immediately too as AMCAS has a propensity toward losing things. Get your LOR's organized so that they can be sent the minute a school requests them. You have no idea how much time can be wasted fooling around with these things in addition to the time AMCAS wastes verifying your application. Many schools do not screen for secondaries, and you should be sending in those secondaries, or filing on-line in some cases, the minute your AMCAS is verified. Basically, you want your files at the schools you're applying to to be as complete as possible in October, so your file can go straight to the adcom the minute your scores hit the file (which can take a while too). Unless you are an extraordinary applicant, you will be shooting yourself in the foot if you wait any longer.

Sorry, LOR means what? Im guessing 'list of refrences'?

close. 😉 Letter of Recommendation

I would even suggest(if possible) that you just wait until next year to apply.

I hope you have your personal statement ready to go. Hopefully your gpa is good also and you better make damn sure you rock the aug mcat. If not, I would seriously contemplate just applying next cycle.

If your gpa is high and you have a personal statement ready to rock and rolllthen submit them, NOW!!!!!

yikes, i had no idea i was this late in the game..

i got a pretty good GPA and my letters are pretty organized.. but ****, i dont even know what schools to apply to...i think im gonna go visit that "list of lowest tier medical schools" post.

im sure the answer is somewhere in this forum but im too stressed to look for it..how much is this **** gona cost per school that i send my primary to??

If I remember correctly its $130 for the first school then $30 each additional school. But don't quote me. Gees...I'm so lame...I can't even remember how much it costs...and I went through this process with 30+ schools...twice!!!

Hehe 😀

thanks UCLAMAN. one more question..

i took the mcats last year and did pretty piss poor (didnt release and gonna take them again in two weeks) but since the new score reporting history thing that came out , they arent able to see my score since i took it before 2003 right? so basically they have to make a decision on sending out their secondary to me without knowing your mcat score?

It's 150 for the first school...lol, don't recall for additional...30? Anyway, do you have a personal statement ready....if not, then do a search on this forum....wasn't there an old thread which had a helpful list of questions to help you write a pers statement??

Well...most a lot of schools don't screen and will send you their secondary regardless of your scores. There was a recent thread about which schools actually screen. I'm not sure what the schools that screen will do without having an mcat score. Most schools don't screen though and you should automatically get secondaries from the majority of the places you apply to. Sorry that wasn't of much help.

bobmarley...i think u may be right...i'm pretty sure the first school is over $100(so 150 is probably right)...and i'm pretty sure each additional is $30.

i'l prob be done with my primary by the end of this week i think (everyone here seems to be ahead of the game except me 😕 ) but, can i mail out my transcript requests now? i just dont want aamc to get my transcripts before they get myonline application cuz they might lose it, right? or should i just send out my transcript requests now anyway...? thanks.

ya and if anyone knows where that thread on personal statements is please link to it. search not working...

Don't worry about it too much! Pretty much everyone on here is the people who are definitely on top of the game. Everyone here is applying to the top schools, has 35's on the MCATs, a 3.95 GPA and has geared their whole lives towards being a doctor. I can definitely respect this, and although they do offer good advice, don't worry too much. I have a good GPA and activites, and I took the MCATs for the first time in April. I did ok, but not that great. I truned in all my stuff in the middle of July and have gotten a couple of secondaries back, but I'm taking the August MCAT too, and it's hard to balance both. Spend some time and try to get the AMCAS stuff in soon, you'll definitely be glad to have nothing to worry about for a few days when the MCAT is over. As far as the "lower tier schools," don't worry about the rankings. They are just how a group of people view a school. Sure, graduating from Harvard will probably land you a better residency than many other places, but a better life? Not necessarily. Apply to places that match your interests and just be happy. I took that route and applied to 15 schools, only 2 of which were top 25. Oh well. In the end, you'll make your own career by building up a reputation as a skilled physician, regardless of med school. Good luck with all of this!

Don't freak out - if you submit this week, I doubt you'll be at a serious disadvantage (among August MCATers anyway) since there'll be time enough to have everything done by the time your scores are released. Just stay on top of things and don't procastinate with the secondaries when they arrive (my guess would be around September). Good luck!

thanks..

i have a feeling my undergrad schools are gonan tkae forever to submit my transcripts... but if they get there before my app goes through...is AMCAS gonna lose my transcripts or not know where to keep them filed?

I would go ahead now with getting your schools to release the transcripts...don't even think about the possibility that they will lose your transcripts.

a bunch of these schools have an Aug 1 deadline.. if i submit my primary by the 30th, the transcrips still wont get to AMCAS by Aug 1. Is this gonna be a problem?

i don't get it....why's everyone blasting the OP? let's say the OP were to get all his apps(prime and sec) in by october, wouldn't he still be in the running with all the other august mcaters? i thought they simply put your app in a seperate(degenerate) pile if you're taking the august mcat and wait until your scores come out before reviewing your file. was i wrong?

They do put your file in another pile if u are a aug mcater. However, if your file is COMPLETE(ie all your file is waiting for is the scores. it already has LORs, secondary essays etc.) by the time your scores arrive it will be reviewed asap. But if one decides to submit amcas in october then it would take another month or two before he or she gets secondaries and it may take another month before those secondaries and LORs are received and filed by each school. By that time it is too late. People don't seem to take into account the lag time between each step of the app process. Everything in this game needs to be done EARLY if possible.

I don't think we're all blasting her really....just giving her a shot of reality. 🙂

chikantikka-
BTW...OP means "original poster." You are the original poster.

oh, i didn't mean "blast" in a bad way. anyhow, maybe you misunderstood my question. if the OP were to have all his primary, secondary, LOR, and trancripts(which is technicially possible but not realistic) then he wouldn't be in such a bad predicament, right?

Right...But the days are a wastin' here. Hopefully the OP can have ish out by the first week of Aug so they can receive all of their secondaries with enough time to complete them before the aug scores come out.

Each medical school have different deadlines for the primary and secondary applications. The earliest deadline a school can havefor PRIMARY applications is October 15th. Now, it is true that you will be at a slight (and I state again, slight) disadvantage by not having your primary in in June, but I would relax. It is more important to get your application done well then in quickly. I had 5 very close friends all wait until the first week in September last year to send in their primary application, and they all got accept to medical schools. Especially with your state school(s), I wouldn't be in such a hurry, but I would get your primary in as soon as you can. Relax, and remember, people on SDN are truly anal about these things. If you're really worried, meet with an admissions counselor at a medical school, they're tell you the real truth.
