hi, i was planning on waiting until next summer to apply for MD but i think i might be ablt to get into a DO this year if i do good on the MCAT. Problem is i won't do good unless i take it in august to give me more time studying for it so when is the best and latest time to apply?

Also, is there a website or book that shows all of the DO schools and what their statistics for acceptance were and the rankings of the schools etc.?

Apply blind (without an MCAT score) to both MD and DO or sit out this cycle. If you wait to get your MCAT score back you'll have it in October and you'll be a re-applicant next year (unless you are doing well above the DO averages). I'd say the aim is to be complete by September (at the latest). Just my humble opinion.

I applied at the very beginning of the cycle but took the MCAT in the middle of July, if I remember correctly. By the time I got my scores I had already completed many of the secondaries and was early in the cycle. As a result of not knowing my score, I over applied, but I wouldn't change anything if I had to do it again. It's a minor investment for a much bigger payoff when all is said and done.

I agree with the above. Start your applications early, submit without your MCAT score and then update when you get it back. You will still be in the running. I pushed by my second MCAT to September 2009 due to health problems and still got all my secondaries in WELL within all of my deadlines.

I was told by my pre-med advisor to sit out the 09-10 cycle due to my average MCAT score. Instead of applying to the ~25 schools I was planning to, I pared my list down to the schools I REALLY wanted to go to. I picked 5 MD and 4 DO schools I could see myself loving, and decided to take a chance and apply anyway. I went in knowing I might have to re-apply (and spend more money) but I felt the pros outweighed the cons. I luckily had my parents help me out with the costs and then was able to pay them back later in installments.

I ended up at my top choice DO school, which I'm really happy with. You couldn't pay me enough to go throught the application cycle again. That's my story, it worked out for me, but it's up to you to decide if it's worth the chance.

apply if you really want to become a DO. The schools can figure out if they are a backup for MD. A good MCAT does NOT guarantee admission to DO or MD schools.
