Hello,

I'm wondering when should I apply for DO programs this cycle. DO would be my backup to MD program.

If an offer is made, how much time DO schools give to accept it? And what happens if I get accepted to MD and could I be able decline after accepting it? Any consequences?

I heard some DO schools require references from DO physicians.... how long one should shadow to get reference that would be meaningful/acceptable?

Thanks,

Do a search, this has been covered twice a day for the past three years.

And I'd definitely keep the "backup plan" under wraps. It won't be looked upon favorably. I sure hope you don't take someone's spot who actually wants to be a DO. Why don't you save yourself some money (and time) by applying to safety MD schools instead of DO? But you know what they say about opinions ...

One thing to consider is what you think your chances of acceptance to a US allopathic school are-- if you're applying with a solid application (good LOR, 30+ MCAT, 3.5+ GPA) with a broad range of schools, then you may want to hold off on the DO schools this application cycle. If, however, your application is borderline and YOU WOULD RATHER GO TO AN OSTEOPATHIC SCHOOL THAN REAPPLY then send in the DO apps, probably earlier rather than later, as they have rolling admissions as well.

Apply right now. Well as soon as you can. If you do get an interview, they don't say "You are coming October 13th." Most give you days to choose from. Just schedule your interview later than your MD ones. But what are your stats? Apply DO as early as you can even if it is a backup. But don't say it is a backup.

Thanks,
If you have put down the deposit and then withdraw, the only consequence is being out 1-2 thousand dollars
