Hey, i was confused by the info on the ACER website. I thought i read somewhere that med school starts in February. Am i right or wrong? I go to an US university in which we graduate in May. I'm going into my senior year of college. So when do i apply? Can i start in Fall 2006 or do i have to wait till February 2007 to start med school. Also its says that USyd is 4.5 year program. What's the difference between graduation time of that and a 4 year program? Does it make a difference with the NRMP match in the US? Just confused about when to apply in general. Thanks for you help.

Melbourne is 4.5 years, USyd is 4.

Yes, fall here is spring in the US. You can apply up to about August, get interviewed by October, offers up to December, start school end Jan or in Feb. If you graduate May, you have 9 months before starting med. Some will travel around SE Asia in this time, but most the int'ls are a few years older.

So do i still apply this summer or should i wait till next summer if i have to wait 9 months to start med school in Australia if i graduate in May. I saw on the U. of Melbourne website that GEMP students start at semester 2 What month does semester 2 start? Kim, Pitman or anyone more info is much appreciated. Ahh so confusing. Thanks!

Since you would not be starting until Jan/Feb 2007, you wouldn't apply until the summer before, or 2006. I wasn't aware that Melb Uni had its GEMP students start the second semester (which would be around Sept or the Northern fall). I suggest contacting them if this is your preferred institution because perhaps you can start in the Northern fall there, but at all other Aussie schools the first term would be in Jan/Feb.

Hey Kim thanks for the info. Just a few more questions. i feel like i'm bothering you all with my questions. I just wanna thank everyone for their help. If Melbourne starts in semester 2, then can i apply just their this summer 2005 and still apply to 2 other aussie schools using ACER during summer 2006? Once again thanks for your help. With the programs that start in Jan/Feb, does that conflict with the time of the match or would i have already graduated by the time of the match? Thanks for everything!

jug:

if you apply to melbourne now in this round, they will consider your application for entry in Semester 2 2006. (as in commencing July next year.) that will get you into a 4.5 year program, finishing in 2011.

if you apply to sydney or the other GEMPs now in this round, they will consider your application for entry in semester 1 2006. (as in commencing february next year.) that will get you into a 4 year program, finishing in 2010.

be careful with melbourne--if you put them as your first choice, they will hang on to your application until they get all int'l applicants for that round in, and you'll have missed the deadline for the other schools. might be worth a chat to the admissions officer if you want to apply to melbourne as a first choice but have other backups that you don't have to wait around a year for.

hope i didn't confuse you further. 🙂

banana K, thanks for the info, but i cant apply to the schools that start in semester 1 because my university (Penn State) and most uni's in USA as a matter of fact dont graduate till May. So if i apply this year, it only makes sense to apply to Melbourne and not the others. I guess i will apply to the other schools (e.g. sydney, UQ) next summer if i dont get into Melbourne. Another question i have is will ACER only allow me to apply to only 1 others school next summer or will i be able to apply to 2 schools that internationals are allowed to apply to? What do you guys suggest i do?

acer lets you apply to one school top choice, to whom they send your application, and if they reject you, your app gets passed on to your second choice. so yes, through acer you get the one shot.

some schools (flinders is it?) also let you apply directly in ADDITION to this, so check into that as you're applying.

No bother...don't worry.

For programs that start Semester 1 (Jan/Feb), you will graduate in December. Therefore, you will have approximately 6 months off before starting residency. Thus, you have time to get your ECFMG certificate before the match ROL is sent in and shouldn't have other timeline issues. I actually found it rather easy to do since I was back in the US for the match, interviews, etc. and didn't have to rush around trying to get all my paperwork in place for a July start since I had done it all several months earlier.

I think the comment above in reference to applying to schools starting in Semester 1 was made in the belief that if you applied to start Semester 2 right after graduation from PSU, that you could still then apply to other schools starting the FOLLOWING Semester 1 if you didn't get in. As banana notes, you'll have to make sure you keep on top of Melbourne and let other schools know you are interested, because while academia is not particularly efficient, Aussie academe is even worse. Don't let your app languish without checking in and letting everyone know your plans.
