Hi this is my first time messaging. I wanted to know when would be a good time to apply for the 2009 cycle. I am entering my senior year next month. I have a 2.8 gpa and a 20 mcat... i know both suck. The gpa i can't do much about now, but I was planning on retaking the MCAT. The latest date is in september but I doubt I will show much improvement by then. My question is, if I were to take the MCAT in March,April,MAY of next year, and score decent,,lets say 25+, 1) would it be too late to apply 2) are the scores good enough for acceptance?

Thanks

I would take the MCAT ASAP. For this fall semester do whatever it takes to raise your gpa. With a 2.8 gpa, I am not sure which schools will accept you. I am assuming your science gpa is low, so you might want to focus raising that specifically. And try to apply before April 2009 to all 9 pod schools.

I have a similar "when to apply" question also:

My overall gpa is 3.5, science is 3.85. I am taking organic I & II and BIO I & II during the next 2 semesters. I plan on taking the MCAT sometime around Jan. 2009. A have very good LOR's and have spent a lot of time shadowing a POD. Should I apply when it opens in Sept. or wait until after the first of the year, when I only have 2 more pre-req classes left? My intention is to apply to OCPM and SCHOLL only, due to closeness to family. My hope is to obtain a conditional acceptance for fall 2009 prior to completing the last 2 pre-req's in May 09. Any thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks.

Apply when the app opens. You should be golden for both schools (OCPM takes anyone)

I wouldn't take the MCAT until I was finished with organic I & II and BIO I & II.

Can I wait until May to take the MCAT? I was thinking that it might be cutting it too close.

Footguy--I'm actually in the exact same situation. I've taken all of my pre-reqs except for the MCAT, which I also plan to take in Jan. 2009. My numbers aren't too bad: cGPA-3.65, science GAP-3.7. Plus, I've got a ton of extracurriculars cuz i was pre-med for a really long time. But considering Pod schools are on a rolling admissions basis, I don't know if applying after Ive taken the MCATs would be too late. Any input?

As you are preparing for your MCAT, take as many practice MCATs to gauge where you are at. Until you get consistent & good scores, then you should take the actual MCAT. For OCPM, Im sure over 20 on the MCAT would be fine. Not sure how hard SCHOLL is to get in. Also, you should call up SCHOLL & OCPM admissions to figure out your pre-req situation & MCAT situation.

As long as you apply before April 2009 you are still considered priority. If you plan on taking the MCAT during january, you still got ample time to apply for pod school.

Maybe Barry will take the take the MCAT that late but the others probably won't. With my conditional acceptances, DMU wanted the MCAT taken by mid March and Scholl wanted the test by April.

Are you sure? OCPM's website specifically states you need atleast 3.0 science gpa. AZPOd and DMU's minimum gpas are lower than that, according to the websites.

I'm sure. AZPOD and DMU may say that but their entrance stat averages are far above that of OCPM.

The AACPM requires a minimum GPA of a 2.5. However, most of the top tier schools don't consider that competitive.

I know for a fact that OCPM does not just take anyone. I cant comment on current admissions practices (whether they take anyone), etc but I have know a couple of people whom got rejected and their stats were better than the average applicant.

Your best bet is to increase your mcat score at least a couple of points ( about 22+)and do your best to increase your gpa. ocpm usually accepts people for upcoming matriculation all the way until july of the year you want to start. Or the earlier in the admissions cycle you apply the better. goodluck.

thanks for all the input, guys. I guess it all really comes down to: A slightly incomplete application (no mcat) that's turned in early in the cycle versus a complete application that's turned in on time, or really close to the priority deadline. =/

i know people who were rejected from OCPM, some for taking the DAT, and others with GPAs and MCATs that were higher than the previous posts
