I will be graduating in May, and wondering when to start applying for hospital jobs (staff pharmacist)?? I have heard from one pharmacy director that most hospitals will not even consider you until you have your license in-hand. Others may start the interview process only after graduation. Is this true??

Its a waste of time for a dop to interview a student who won't be licensed for another 6 month when there will be a stack of highly polished cv from residents and pharmacists with experience....whom are licensed.

Agree with Z. Hospital staff openings are more of an immediate need. They are usually looking for a person who can start within the next month or so. They don't know what positions they will have open in July when you would be able to start.

Anyway, why would you want more work and less pay. It's basically the same job but you have Dr.'s and nurses barking at you as to why you are in their way of getting the medication.

The only jobs I know of that will start interviewing for jobs 6 months out are academia (since they have to plan the year well in advance) and government (because the hiring process takes 6 months).

Retail used to hire a few months before graduation so new hires will learn the system and be ready to go by the time they are licensed, but now most just hire interns who worked for them during school and already know the ropes.

I would take a look around, so you can get idea of who is hiring. I interviewed with my hospital in April, graduated in May, started working in July as a "graduate pharmacist" (training). I didn't get licensed until August.

Good luck!!

Accepted an offer for a clinical pharmacist position at a large hospital in outskirts of a saturated metro area where I am from! I applied about a month prior to graduation.

All the anxiety about finding a job is finally gone! 😀😀😀 Wish I had a pumpkin to smash!

Last summer the hospital I work for hired two recently graduated pharmacists before they took their NAPLEX. They just had to make sure to get everything done within 6 months of hiring. Every hospital varies, but hey... it's possible, so just apply!

Yep! I will take the NAPLEX and MPJE in a few weeks. Train as a graduate intern.
