Hey everyone!

Any suggestions on when would be the best time to send out resumes for OMFS internship opportunities? I've started sending out some already, but was curious if I should wait for match day or sometime after? Thanks!

I applied to 35 programs Wed-Fri and most have said they already were filled. Unreal.

Wow that’s crazy. I was always under the impression that you didn’t have to hurry to get a non-cat position, but I guess I was wrong

Keep in mind there were 60 more OMFS applicants this cycle compared to last cycle. Internships are becoming not only a reality but a hot commodity with the uptrend of applicants.

We accept our non-cat interns at Parkland within 1-2 days after the match results are released. Most are offered positions the day of the match.

No, we consider all applications.
Some programs still have open spots, I would keep emailing/searching.
In the interim, I would sign up for a GPR or a dental anesthesia year. My advice is always to stay in "education" whether that be an omfs internship, GPR, dental anesthesia spot. I think it is much harder to match and a bigger transition when you go to private practice in the gap years.

Do you know which programs have open spots?

So for future reference, what is the way to go about a cycle given the recent increase in demand for intern positions? apply for residencies AND intern spots at the same time? approach programs early to inform them of your interest in intern position in case you don't match?

I was under the impression that if you have a good shot at matching you just apply for residencies and only if things don't work out, then you reach out to internships.

From experience, preferences will be given first to those that were interviewed, and were high on someone's list but were still not able to match. I think it's more fair that way for the applicant and easier for the program since they already know you. Also a lot of programs only want to offer an internship to someone they feel has a strong shot next cycle... i don't know if there are published stats, but some programs like to speak of how 100% of their interns last year were able to match... etc.
