Do you apply to an SMP a year ahead or same year? For example if I want to go to an SMP in 2011-2012 and the due date says June does that mean that I needed to apply June 2010 or do I apply by June 2011? I don't know why this confuses me! But I really need someone to answer! Thanks

SMP apps open about 10 months ahead of the start of school. As with med school apps, apply early & broadly. SMPs are competitive, so aiming to beat the deadline is aiming to apply for the waitlist. December-January is a great time to apply.

Best of luck to you.

Do we really need to apply now? In January? I've seen that programs mention they don't look at apps until after the deadline...

If the program specifically states that they wait to look at apps, sure, wait. Otherwise, early is better. In about 2 weeks we'll start seeing folks here posting acceptances to EVMS, Tufts, Cincinnati, Gtown etc.

This brings me to another question: I will be taking the MCAT on January 28th, and I haven't taken it previously. Can I submit applications to SMP programs without having an MCAT score, or will they require me to have a score beforehand? Are all SMP's different in this regard?

Thank you! 🙂

Yes, it'll vary by program, and I think it's a tough call whether to submit without an exam score.

Personally, I'd prefer to wait until my score was in hand, because then my first impression with the admissions folks isn't one of being an incomplete app. Submitting with your score in February is still earlyish.

Best of luck to you.

It's situational based like ^ midlife said, but if the rest of your application is "competitive" enough, then I don't see it as being a problem. Remember that they're using your MCAT score/application to predict your potential of being a successful student in the SMP.
