Need to wait for next year's application cycle and I am a graduating senior. I already have a good 18 months doing research in my college so I figure it would be nice to get some clinical experience. I volunteered for 250+ hours in a local hospital but most of that was during high school (which doesn't count towards med schools apps for some reason)

Anyway I contacted the supervisor I know at the volunteer department, someone who has always complemented me and is a friendly helpful person. In return I got the coldest email I have probably ever received. I ask something along the lines of "would you know who I could contact to talk about summer/part time jobs with" and she replies "[my name] if you don't want to return to your volunteering then don't email me, I'm not a switchboard"

😕 Apparently I hit a nerve there. So anyway I contact Human resources and they really don't seem to care about anything "the jobs we have open are listed online". I ask them that yes, i saw those, and could they tell me more about them and what they require. They essentially say "If you don't know what they are, don't bother applying"

😕😕
Okay, so I call another hospital, hoping that this one isn't on PMS, and I don't get much further. I ask human resources when I should apply for a job I want to start in May. They are dumbfounded, "apply for a job when you are looking for one" is the answer I get, apparently they have never heard of applying for something in advance. When I ask "What jobs are good to apply for if I am looking for temporary (1 year) work?" They are utterly confused at this point "Well, i guess you could quit after 1 year but that would be odd..."😕

Summary: I'm so confused. Is it really that unheard of for a graduation senior to work in a hospital at a low level job for a year while he waits for the next app cycle?

I think you are just approaching it wrong. Don't tell them in advance that you are going to quit in a year. Apply for any jobs that don't require specific certifications. I would start applying now, because it can take quite a long time to hear back.
