When to ask for letters of rec?

I'm planning to apply this summer. When do I need to ask for LORs by?

You can start asking now even though it's well in advance. Professors have many lors to write so ask before they get back logged with requests

3-6 months before you need to submit your application.
Professors are busy people, you need to give them some time to write something with quality

Now is a great time with a reminder in April. You can set up an Interfolio account so they can submit them when they are done, unless you have a committee. In that case, ask the committee about timing requirements. All my letters were required in by March.
