When to be available for interviews-2014 applications?

I will applying for medical school when the application opens in June 2014. I would like to go on vacation abroad for 1-2 weeks (I'm really going to need it!) at some point over the summer or fall or maybe even winter. Is there any time point I should stay away from in order to get my secondaries in and be available for interviews?

If you do end up submitting in June, you can expect to be verified by early-mid July, at which point you will begin to receive your secondaries, with interviews following as early as September. I would aim to take time off right after you submit your primary application, where you'll have up to a month's waiting time to get verified.

You still could get verified within this time though if you are submitting the second they open up (some people were verified same day after all). Why not sometime in May before you start the whole thing?

1-2 weeks is not long enough to be a problem during interview season, as pretty much all schools give you multiple dates to choose from. The one school that sent me a single date, I simply told them I was unavailable that day and they quickly rescheduled me for a few weeks later. You just want to avoid your vacation falling in the time when most of your secondaries are coming in. Look at the verification thread for this year for a lot of data on when people got verified. Most secondaries will arrive in the 1-3 days after verification. You will want to submit your primary in June to still be 'early'.

Just go right after you submit. Even if you submit on the first day (June 10) and get verified that same day, applications don't get sent to school til the end of June (3 weeks later), so there's plenty of time to chill between submitting your application and starting secondaries. Basically, 2nd half of June seems like the ideal time for vacation.
