When to collect LORs?

I worked for a pathologist who was willing to write me a letter of recommendation. It has been about half a year since I left the workplace. I am meeting with them soon to discuss about my plans to apply in the next cycle. Should I ask for him to write me a LOR or wait until the cycle comes? What is a good rule of thumb for gathering LORs?

Get it done ASAP and have them date it for closer to the cycle if they don't mind. You'd be shocked how unprofessional some people are about following up on things they've agreed to do as important as a LoR for a student's app process.

I was planning a re-app before I got a late A, requested updated letters from my previous professors in March, still technically waiting on 2 out of 4, lol.
