Which month should I do an away rotation? Is July too early given the incoming residents will be getting acclimated as well? Is mid Sept to mid Oct too late, or just right?

It all depends, I would do my first rotation of 4th year at my home program. I think most places that is July. This allows you to learn everything before you do your away so you shine when you do your away. I would then do my away rotation that next month if possible and I would say Sept is okay and Oct is pushing it. Nov is too late.

If you are wanting LOR from your away rotation, this complicates things. You need your application in by the first wk in Sept so August may be too late to get a LOR in time. I know some people including me just got our LOR from our away rotation and sent it ourselves to my favorite programs. If you can do your home program before July or don't have a home program then definitely do your away in July if possible.

Lastly I would get started early talking to programs about securing a spot as it can be difficult. The earlier the better for everything in my opinion. Also don't worry about the residents coming in, you are gonna want to work with attendings as much as possible during these rotations.
