hey,

this maybe a stupid question... but when should someone go to the ER? Obviously, emergencies only, but what is an emergency? All day today my fiance has been really dizzy & nauseous on and off. She has had it before (always around the time of her perioud and perhaps after eating), except it normally went away after a couple hours. We recently moved so we don't know any doctor in the area and it's sunday so nobody is open around here. She took some benadryl (mildly helped- made her tired) and has been laying at home all day. We will probably make an appointment tomrrow. But, it has been pretty scary. We don't really know what to do. Should we go to emergency room?

Sdn Is Not To Be Used As A Source Of Medical Advice. If You Think You Need To Go To The Er Then Go. Please Contact Your Physician For Advice. 🙂

Most often people go to the ER when they believe the situation is an emergency for THEM. If you are unsure at all and you can't get in touch with your PCP, then definitely go to the ER

yeah sorry, i dont expect advice. one time i went to the ER and the ER doc made me feel like a ******. bc it probably wasnt an emergency and i was probably wasting his time.... but i didnt know any better. i just hear all the time how people are always going to the ER for stuff they shouldnt be going for.... i dont want to waste anybody's time if i dont have to...

Don't worry, that's just our job.

Are you sure you didn't knock her up?

Young women that come to me with a complaint of dizziness, get a pregnancy test, EKG, neurological exam. If she doesn't have chest pain, shortness of breath, or leg pain, she's likely going to be ok for an office visit.

You can go to the ED, just don't expect "the answer" just a risk stratification that the doc doesn't think it's X, Y, and Z. Your PCP (or a PCP) will still likely be involved in the work up.

haha, her mother asked her the same thing (if i knocked her up). she is on the last couple days of her period, so i would hope not. however, i thought i heard somewhere that some times women will still have light bleeding the first month after conceiving... i can't remember where i heard this, but i don't think it was menstruation causing the bleeding.

thanks for the reassurance. she is feeling a little better today & we are going to make an appt with a pcp. one thing i have always kind of worried about is knowing when to go to the EM. i suppose if i need to, i will know because it will be really bad!
