Is it okay to not have your application ready to go in time for Sept 1st? Do a lot of Neuro programs fill their interview list before November? I'm wondering this because I'm a third year Carib student and unfortunately my required rotation schedule is packed until July 26th. Which means I have one month to write Step II and do a Neuro Rotation and get good LOR's in time for September. My step 1 score is competitive (229/99), but because I'm from the Carib, plus I'm Canadian so I will be applying with a J-1 Visa. I figure because of this my step 2 ck will be a requirement for serious consideration by program directors. But, is it okay to initially apply with only LOR's from Internal Med or Psych until I complete a Neurology rotation? My goal is to match into a middle-tier program in the Northeast.

I stupidly didn't turn mine in till Sept 16, and started getting invites the next day. However, I really wish it had been out the door on Sept 1. Lots of places send out interviews in batches, which if you look at last year's thread, there seems to be a first batch that gets looked at in the Sep 1 - 15 range.

The big thing for getting it in early is to get first dibs on dates for interviews.

Wow, thats good to know. It seems I won't be able to get either my step 2 ck scores in by sept or I will be missing LOR's from Neurologists (I can probably get them from Psych and IM core rotations though).

Which is more important to get an interview do you think, especially as I am coming from a carib school? Whichever one is missing I will at least be able to get in by October...like can I call the residencies and say "hey I just added my step 2 ck score or hey I just added an LOR from a Neurology rotation I completed, can you take another look at my app?"

Finalize your application as soon as you can, ideally on the first day. If programs are willing to grant you an interview based on your application sans step 2 scores, then great. If not, then you will be emailing them and uploading that information as soon as you get it.

Many applicants don't have their step 2 scores before they finalize, and many do an extra rotation in the fall where they get a new LOR. Those can be added later.

Thanks for the post, it really helps me roadmap my final year!
