I read in the popular Isserson residency guidebook that it is better to interview later, like January, because you will have a more recent impression on the committee when they make their rank list. However, in speaking with my advisor in my IM department, I was told not to interview in January as much as could be avoided because it gives the impression that you're not as interested in that program. I would appreciate any other opinions from anyone who has gone through the process on either side of the interviewer's desk.

I really don't think it matters-- I have interviewed applicants in both Nov and Jan. I write evaluations the same day. The ones I really like, I have no problem remembering when it comes to rank list time whether they interviewed early or late.(nicedream) said:
The only advice I would give is to get a few out of the way early so your Dec/Jan schedule isn't packed. Interviewing can get really tiring. Preferably places that you aren't really stressed about. Perhaps a "safety" or two, and your home institution because you will feel more comfortable there. This will get you a little practice for places you car a lot about.
Also-- DO A PRACTIVE INTERVIEW. Some med schools arrange this for you, if they don't, I would suggest getting an advisor or one of your letter writers to do a dry run with you. It helped me a lot more than I could have imagined as a med student.
