I'm sure this has been covered ad nauseum, but I can't seem to find any old threads on this. When is good time to register for USMLE? Do the testing centers get swamped around the first or second week of June? Also, how much is it to change the date once you've scheduled? I've got the cash now to register and I'm wondering if I should lock myself into a date. Please advise. Thanks.

I'd be surprised if your school didn't have a 'class meeting' or some such event to discuss this (and perhaps even register.) Look into that.
If that doesn't apply to you then just register now for the 3 month period beginning at the earliest time you're willing to take the test. Then when you get your orange ticket in the mail you can pick your date.
Dunno how much it costs to switch dates, check the USMLE website.

we had a meeting and we are required to register by mid-oct for a test in june

hope that helps ur decision a bit more 🙂

It also depends on where you are. I know that in my home town (where I'm currently doing rotations) they have a testing center that has the USMLE...it stays pretty empty seeing how there's not a medschool in the area. I was able to schedule mine without any difficulty and had pretty much every days available so I could pick and choose. Again, I think it has to do with the demand in the area.

to add to the list of questions, how much study time after school ends do you think is needed for reviewing material before step 1?

and once again, does anyone know how much it costs to reschedule?

Your location says UCLA, do you go there, did I miss this meeting or something?

Don't worry about how full the center is. Mine was at full capacity but I didn't even notice. After all the time I spent working for it I was sort of focused. If I were to do it again I'd schedule it as late as possible (again). That test is ALL about study. What's good also is to take a little brake before you start to wash school right out of your mind. Go somewhere fun and enjoy yourself. Then start your study. Also take a little break in the middle. Again go somewhere fun and enjoy yourself. Then come back and go over your stuff again with fire in your belly till the end. That worked for me and kept me from going nuts. Really that test takes a LOT of study. Good luck.

The other way to do it is to study step one stuff during medschool and then do the four week "revision" mad dash. Too hardcore for me. 🙂
