I've recently been honored with a recognition at my clinical volunteering site they give to I think like 8 people a year (out of some hundred volunteers), would it be worth sending this independently as an update to schools or do you think it may be worth sending in addition to other things? By that I mean, I will be on a couple abstracts (and possibly papers) that are to be submitted to conferences but won't know if they're accepted for some months, most likely.

I agree with this approach. Could also include pertinent fall-term grades, if you are still in school.

So one of the two abstracts I mentioned above has been accepted at a regional conference. I won't hear about the other abstract, which is for a national conference, until early/mid October. Is it worth pulling the trigger now on the update or should I wait until October? (Either time I send it would include the aforementioned volunteering award in the update)

Unless one of your schools has the rare "send us anything new that might affect your candidacy" advisory, I still think you should wait and have one really-meaty update.

And congrats on the abstract acceptance.
