When to Shadow?

Hello,

I am wondering when I should start shadowing physicians? I took all of the information from my last thread and decided that I would like to shadow some D.O.'s. I am currently planning to apply to medical school next year. Is now too early to begin shadowing physicians and to ask for LOR's?

Nope. Never too early. Do it as soon as you can so you can cross it off your list.👍

I am in an another interesting situation as well. I am in a city with a proposed Osteopathic school that hasn't opened yet. Should I request a shadowing opportunity with the proposed Dean of that school? He is in the AOA's mentor list. Just wondering.

If you have the time, I would try and shadow both. Plus in the end you never know who will and won't write you the mandatory LOR (for most schools), so best to keep your options open 😀

very, VERY true. It is never too early to start networking. The longer time you give people to know you, the more they'll be able to include in your letter.

And even if they won't write you a letter, you never know if they can help you in the future. Always try to keep one foot in the door, my friend.

Start shadowing now. Just because you start looking now doesn't mean that you will actually find someone right away.
