When to sign up for Step I

Im going to med school in Canada (started second year), and was just wondering when i should sign up for step I.......i dont wanna miss a spot. How far in advance does one sign up ususally?

I think you can send in your application as early as Nov/Dec but I think scheduling has to be within 6 months. e.g. I think you can't sign up at prometric for exam in July if your permit comes in Dec...will have to wait till Jan to do it...
