I will be entering dental school this summer and was wondering when should I start worrying about specialization?? I only ask because I shot myself in the foot not worrying about dental school admissions until JR/SR year of undergrad and had to enter a Master's program to compensate for low GPA.

I have been working on/off with a Pediatric dentist for about 6-7 years now, as an assistant, and I love it. I am still on the fence about whether it's something I want to specialize in, however I want to leave that door open because I definitely see myself as a Pedo later on.

Basically, what I'm asking is there anything in particular I should be doing right from the get-go in D-school? I know grades are important so in that aspect, would top half of the class be good enough? Is research mandatory for Pedo programs? What else can be done to solidify chances of getting into a Pedo-Program...(a Pedo101 for dummies would be great!)

Any info would help!

Thanks!

as far as rank, i would say AT LEAST the top 1/4 in your class. pedo is getting more an more competitive.

grades, outreach, getting to know your pedo faculty really well.. externship in 3rd year.. keeping up with your assisting if you can. make your resume scream pedo. i didn't apply for pedo outright, but personality and team-player ethic are great qualities to any residency. if at the end of the day your interest in pedo fizzles, make sure you are still a great GP or that your resume reflects any other specialty that might pique your interest.
good luck!
