Step II When to take it

worthless post...in fact, most questions on this forum have been asked in the past in one way or another, does that mean we should never ask questions and SDN should continue soley as an archive for searches? I too would like to know the answer to this question.
There are many strategies as to when to take Step II.
Depends on how competitive your specialty is. If you are going into something competitive, it is definitely a good idea (more like a requirement) to take it before you interview. If your field is somewhat competitive and you feel confident in your Step I score then you might not need to take it.
Also depends on how you scored on Step I. If you rocked Step I then you might not need to take Step II before interviews. If your score was low then it's probably a good idea to study really hard and take Step II before interviews so you can show the programs you can do well on the boards.
You should talk to people in the field you want to go into to get their advice.

Yes, people should search for basic questions. They can post their own specific questions.
sorry if i bothered anyone with the question...i had actually searched, and saw a lot of the same replies that really didn't get my point. The people I had heard this from faired really well on the I (high 240), and still had the advice that to take the IIs after interviewing would be "hurtful" as a applicant. Since this was the first time i'd heard, i just wanted to see how many others believed this advice.
In my personal opinion, as someone who just took both CS and CK in early January, I really wish I had taken it earlier. I think having had the stuff fresh in my mind would have made studying the test a lot easier. Plus I along with other classmates have felt a precipitous drop in our motivation levels lately. Seriously, it should only take one a little over 2 weeks of steady studying to pass CK and maybe a few afternoons of flipping through a CS book to just get that crap out of the way. Trying to sit for a 9 hour test after or during your interview travels is not fun.
