I heard from many individuals that it's not good to take all the premed reqs in community college.
I'm currently a freshman at a CC with 22 cr hrs so far, and i will be transferring pretty soon to a university.

I planned out my schedule for this coming spring semester and so on. These are the premed courses i will be taking at a community college before i transfer if i go through with it.

Bio 1 and 2
General Chem 1 and 2
org chem 1 and physics 1

Should i not take org chem and physics and just wait till i transfer to a university?

If i don't take org chem/physics i can transfer next fall, but if i do take them i have to transfer next spring. But, the only thing is trying to convince my father because he just wants me to take all of them in a CC which i don't think is recommended.

Definitely don't take orgo at a CC, some schools won't except it from there. I'm waiting to take all my preqres until after I transfer. Especially since you would just be staying an extra semester to take prereqs it won't look good to adcoms.

What is your projected major? If you are majoring in bio don't take your org an physics at a community college. Take as few CC credits as you can with regards to the prereqs. CC credits may or may not hurt you, but university classes definitely won't hurt you, so it is best to play it safe.

Chem & Bio at a CC. Orgo & Physics at Uni. If you're not a science major consider a few upper level science classes as well.

Yes, i was thinking of just taking bio and chem only then transfer to take org chem physics etc. But it's a little hard to convince my father since he has no idea bout med school and he thinks he knows something..
But i plan on it doing what i need to do

I'm planning on majoring in psychology

Alright, sounds good
Sounds exactly how i want to change it. Thanks

I would agree with the above advise. I'm in the same boat as you except I'm a sophomore at a CC. I decided to stay a second year to complete my AS. Knowing what I know now I would have just taken the 30 credit hours of non-science related coures and then transferred after that first year.

since you are majoring in psychology at the university you need to show you can handle hard science at a university. the more science classes you take with As the better chance you have of showing the adcoms that you can handle the rigors associated with med school. you should really take an upper level bio class (or a couple of them) in order to cover your bases. than your CC credits probably wouldn't be an issue.

Me too! where are you planning on transfering may I ask? We might be calssmates 🙂

Well I'm considering a few schools since i qualify for scholarships at each one.

Southern Methodist University
UT-Austin
UT-Dallas

All Texas schools

Rice 😉

But yah apply to a few schools and see what you get. Remember to join Phi Theta Kappa as well.

I transferred from cc to a 4 year in CA. I was also recently accepted at UCI for medical school (interviews at 5 others so far, including a top 5).

I did two years of cc, including:
1 year g. chem
1 year into bio
1/2 year physics (scheduling conflict resulted in taking the second semester at the 4 year)
Also, did my math (calc and statistics) and english (1 year) pre-reqs.

4-year school:
1 year o-chem
1/2 year physics

I was a human biology major so I also did 2 years of upper divisions biology classes after I transferred.

Nice, yea i was thinking of doing calc 1 then transfer to take calc 2
Would pre-calc be a blow off class or should i go straight to calc 1 if i know my basic alg 1/2 ?

And yes i think ill finish up my orgo and physics at a university+ upper-lvl courses like you.

I was also from a CC.

I took bio 1&2 and Gchem 1&2 at my CC
I took Organic I/II and Physics I/II at my 4 year university.

I spoke with the medical school that I am planning on applying to and they said this was sufficient. I agree with the above posters that you SHOULDNT take orgo at a CC as it may not even count, or it may seem like an inflated grade(even though you may have had a tougher prof at your CC than 4-year, which btw could def happen regardless of the whole CC stigma).

I made A's in all my pre-reqs at the CC, and I was fortunate enough to do the same with the orgo's and physics at my 4-year so that def helped because I think it validated my true GPA. you will really help yourself out if you can do this. The reason I say that is bc as a transfer, my pre-med advisor immediately said to me, "you need A's from here on forward, seeing as you came from a CC". .....I know the stigma sucks, but prove them wrong.

take as few pre-reqs as you can at the CC; get your hist, poli sci, humanities out of the way. you may also want to take a nursing anatomy and physiology. it helps + looks good. Also, take many upper div bio's at your 4-year as this will help solidify your GPA and make you seem like a better applicant.
