So my step I score is low (low 200s) and I really want to take step II early so I can include it on my application. I am planning on taking Step II in late September...is this too late???

I want to go into a good IM program.

Its not too late, but considering applications go out september 1, I would take it a lot earlier than that.

only one response??😕

An adviser indicated to my third year class tonight that if your score is under 220, take it early enough to have it available to send out with your application (i.e. take it early enough to have the score back by September 1). If you're over 220, you can wait.

This is dependent on specialty; that cutoff will be different (higher) for "competitive" specialties. But that should suffice for IM/Peds

I'd recommend taking your Step 2 before September so that you'd get your scores back, and have time to tweak your application. It takes about 2-3 weeks to get score reports back (online).

If you have a better score, your Dean's letter (might) reflect on that if you point it out to your Dean. Otherwise, your letter usually consists of comments from your rotations.

basically what my Dean told me was to wait until September to take the test just in case if I did worse than Step I. She said that a Step II score worse than my Step I would jeopardize my chances at places where I can probably get into with my low Step I.

So if I wait till late Sept and do well on Step II I can release my scores to schools. According to her they will get the scores in time...

??😕😕

That might be the way to go in order to ensure that the programs don't see your step 2. try & take step 2 as soon after Sept 1st as possible, so you can re-release your scores as soon as you get them. If the results are not what you hoped for then you have to do some research to see which programs rank w/o step 2 & which require it & decide accordingly.

Good Luck.
