what would you do in this situation.. would you take it before or after application is turned in? Step 1 score was 238/99.

Also is it true that most programs require step 2 now?

I haven't heard that programs require a step 2 for consideration. But my information may be dated.

It's a judgement call. 238 is a great score, but there are plenty of applicants who are in the high 230's and 240s.

If you think you can do better, then take it early.

238 is a solid step 1. Don't take step 2 early to make yourself more competitive. If it's convenient or required sure, but otherwise work on solidifying the rest of your application.

thanks for the advice. Is it true that if you take the test in september, you can choose whether or not to release your score to the programs you applied to? How does this work? Thanks
