When's the best time to take the MCAT? After Sophmore year? after you've taken a certain amount of science classes?

I'm thinking about taking it this forthcoming summer. So far, the science courses I've taken include Orgo 1, Orgo 2, Gen Chem 2, Physics 1 (Algebra-based), Intro to Microbio, Intro to Cell biology. i only plan on taking genetics, human physiology and physics 2 in the winter and spring semesters. Are there any other classes that might be good to take before deciding to take the MCAT?

thanks

Biochem would be helpful, but if it's the difference between taking it this summer and waiting, don't wait to take it. Definitely take it as soon as you've finished all of the prereqs and will have ample time to study for it.

I took it the summer after sophomore year and it was the best decision that I made.

Yea, I might not be able to fit biochem in these next two semesters so it looks like I will have to go without. but thanks for the advice. I think this summer would be the best for me too, simply because I would then really know whether I have a good shot at medical school or not with two years to go in my college career.

After prereqs and right before you apply. This will allow your score to be as valid for as long as possible (3 years). Taking it your sophomore year puts you in a tough spot if you don't get in your first cycle.

Also, I became a whole lot more knowledgable and prepared for the test in general later in my school career. I had a larger vocabulary, had taken random science courses and could identify trick answers a little easier. It made taking the test go better the second time I took it.

i think next semester i will be done with all my pre-reqs, so im definitely leaning towards this summer

yea that's one thing im concerned about. having taking only a certain amount of science courses, im not sure im prepared for some of the advanced level stuff that appears on the MCAT.

I think summer is the best time, if you dont have other things to study for. Definitely take physics II before taking the exam. Genetics and Cell Biology will be good for the BS section. Biochem would help but it's definitely not necessary. If you are worried about the verbal I might take a reading/analysis intensive humanities/lit class to get used to the reading and passages on VR.

Also take it when you feel READY, don't rush it if you don't.

yes, i'm not sure if i'm ready. i'll know once i start studying for it/taking practice exams

you should probably take biology also. it might be a good idea.
