when to write step2?

im a canadian md student interested in residency in the states. just wondering when do most u.s. md students write step2? at the end of3rd year?looking at my schedule i dont have very much time off to study for step2. do most people study for step2 while doing rotations or do you guys get time off to prep?

also, i will have done all the core rotations except emergency and geriatrics af the end of third year. does anyone know if these subjects are emhasized on step2?
