Hey im new to sdn and have some questions. Im almost done with my prereqs and will be taking the mcat in april. Considering that ill get my score back in may, I want to apply the first day of june (2010). My question is how long does the application process take? I know there is a primary, which i will submit in June, and hopefully get a secondary. The interviews are usually sometime in september but classes start in august. Does this mean that i will only start med school in august of 2011?

Yes. You are applying 1 year in advance of the day you want to start. I.E., I am applying right now, so I am hoping to matriculate in August 2010.

Yes, it is a longgggg process, unlike some other professional schools where you can apply as late as March and matriculate in Aug. (Cough...JD...cough)🙄

March? Haha, I had law school contacting me this summer saying something to the effect of, "Hey, when you get your June LSAT score, let us know, because we still have spots open for August 2009 matriculation." Granted, they aren't actually accredited yet, but still.

To the OP, yeah it takes over a year between application and matriculation, if you submit early. Also, interviews generally start in September (though I think some have some august spots) and end sometime around February, I think.

i had a question about the application process as well..

what does it mean to be matched or pre-matched??? i've seen md apps and a few of them listed that they pre-matched to so and so medical school. Does that mean they were automatically accepted with out an interview or what? 😕

sorry if this is a dumb question

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not too familiar with AMCAS, but I think match is unique to TMDSAS (Texas' separate application). We have a date, usually the end of January, where TMDSAS will "match" you to a school according to how you ranked the schools you interviewed at and how the schools ranked you. After this date, you can only hold an acceptance to one Texas medical school at a time.
Pre-matching is getting accepted before that date, ie starting November 15 schools can start sending out acceptances and you can hold more than one from this point until the match. You still have to have interviewed at the school to pre-match though. Does that make sense??

yeah thanks.. so do most people using TMDSAS get in through the pre-match or match?

Umm I'm pretty sure more people get in through pre-match. But I got in through match to one school and then off a waitlist to my current school. So...it's not over til school actually starts. 🙂
