I have already applied for a 4-year HPSP Navy scholarship and my recruiter told me that my kit is awaiting review. I plan to matriculate into dental school in 2011. I was told that I can receive the HPSP under the condition that I am accepted to dental school. Is this information accurate? And when would be the first I hear about my application's status?

Your first question is correct. There is a chance you will be accepted for the HPSP before you are actually accepted to dental school. Obviously if you don't get into school anywhere your scholarship will be given to someone else. Example: The Air Force typically awards their HPSP in early February. So someone could be accepted on Dec.1 (before they get the scholarship), or they could be accepted sometime in March or April (after they get the scholarship). If you are not yet accepted to dental school when you are awarded the HPSP, then it is a conditional acceptance.

If you will (hopefully) begin dental school in the fall of 2011, you'll likely know sometime in the spring of 2011 if you received the HPSP scholarship. I just started school and heard from my Air Force recruiter in early February of this year and if I'm not mistaken, Navy boards are just after the Air Force boards. So I would expect to hear sometime in the spring after the beginning of february. Someone in the Navy would know better specifics than me but I hope that helps!

As Boomer stated, yes, you can be selected for an HPSP scholarship under the condition that you are accepted into a dental program. As long as you have a recruiter on top of things and who cares about his/her recruiting numbers, then you should hear fairly soon after the board meets and the NRD (Navy Recruiting District) is notified of your selection.

I'm here to help you out Boomer. Actually, it sounds like the Navy selection process is different from the AF if you are correct about the AF process. The Navy holds selection boards as needed - usually at least one per month, but may be every couple weeks if enough applications are sent in. The military fiscal year is from Oct 1st until the following Sep 30th. So, The earliest a person applying to a dental program will get notified they are selected for a scholarship is after OCT 1st because if they get one before that, then the money for that scholarship must be given out and used by SEP 30th and if the applicant is not in school yet, then that is a wasted scholarship. But, if they are selected after OCT 1st, then the Navy has until SEP 30th of the following year to disperse the funds, so they can give a dental school applicant a scholarship at that point without being penalized. Once the applicant has been accepted into a dental school, then they submit a copy of the acceptance letter to the Navy and the paperwork can be finalized for the scholarship.

I have planned to apply for the the HPSP Navy scholarship since I was just a freshman in college. I am sure that I want to commission into the Navy if accepted into dental school. I was under the impression that I needed to wait until I was accepted before I applied. This thread makes me nervous because now I am wondering if I am too late!!!!:scared:

I am not certain that I will be accepted this year. I have a high GPA, tons of ECs, volunteer and shadowing hours, but an average DAT score.... I do have an interview scheduled in September for Indiana University, though!! So should I go ahead and apply for the scholarship? Just so I understand correctly, if I do not get accepted I won't necessarily owe anything, I just won't receive the scholarship?

It's not that I haven't researched this enough, I was just following in my best friend's footsteps who was granted the Navy scholarship for medical school this past year...She wasn't accepted into med. school until late February and waited to apply for the Navy scholarship until April! That's what she told me to do......

Nevermind. I spoke to a recruiting officer today and we are going to meet tomorrow. He said I should be fine.
