When will I need my LOR?

I plan to complete the AAMCAS on the first possible day, but am not taking the MCAT until June 13- so the score will be available in mid-July. When will I need to have my letters of recommendation available? The way I understand it, I can't be complete with a school anyway until the secondaries are completed and my MCAT scores are in...so does that mean I have until mid-July to get the LORs together?

I didn't do AMCAS, but yeah schools won't look at you till they have the MCAT...least I've never heard of any. Just make sure you keep a fire under your letter writer's in case they have a little too much inertia in sending them off.

Try to get your letters in before your MCAT score would come in. Even though you may have sent the letters, schools take a bit to put them w/ your file and make it complete. It's much easier to throw the MCAT score in last rather than the letters, IMO.

In regards to LORs, it would be best if you ask now instead of waiting until later. This is one of those things that need to be taken care of first as well as so many other things.

There's always something that could get in the way, so if ask now, it'll not only give the recommender a plenty of time but also you have one less thing to worry about by the time you submit your application.

Thanks everyone. I have all of my academic letter squared away, but just wanted to get more clinical time before that letter is written. I think I'll hold off until mid-June and ask then.

Get it done asap. Many a LOR has been lost due to professors/committee members being gone for the summer. Before you know it - it's September and you are no longer an early applicant!!

I would have to agree with everyone. I've had my fair share of profs lagging on the letters. Do Not tell them there is no rush. I did that, and ended up getting my letters submitted on the last possible day in a few cases, which didn't help my app very much. UTMB was the only school that gave me an interview without letters. Your letters aren't submitted to amcas either. They are to tmdsas, but amcas schools usually request letters with secondaries.

Yes, quite the coinsidence...wonder how that happened?
Like I said, it is only an issue for my clinical LR. I already have a science, non-science, and work letter, and am getting a second science LR. I just feel like in order to get a good clinical letter, it would be worth it to hold off another month or two. I figure if I ask for the letter in early June, and it takes a month to get it back, it will still beat my MCAT scores. Oh, and I'm using interfolio which should help the process on the other end...So I just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't really need the letters to all be in before that...

LOR should be in as soon as possible. I remember my application being in but not being complete because of committee letters and other accompanying LORs. Don't be a pain the butt but stay on top of your pre-med advisor and your recommenders to get their letters in and sent. Most importantly, know who will be your recommenders and talk to them ASAP.
