When you are treated by a DO in the ER, are you offended?

When you end up in the ER and the ER doc who sees you is a DO or if you have a consult with a DO, do you get offended that you were not seen by an MD?

Being that they are going to charge you a couple thousand for the visit or at least the copay, and you did not choose the DO, does that make you mad?

I'm an open minded guy and I don't discriminate between DO's and MD's openly but I do get mad when I end up in the ER and I get the DO doc because for some reason in my mind I still don't see them as equals.

Has that thought ever crossed your mind?

I mean if the MD program does not work out for me, I might have to apply to a DO program and I wouldn't want other people to see me like that.

I would be totally open to being treated by scooby doo if he greeted me in the ER kindly and professionally, with a clear sense of compassion and confidence. I understand on a personal level that maybe YOU prefer to be an MD over a DO (and in all honesty, I do too), but that has absolutely Nothing to do with how you should view other doctors and their qualifications.

WTH?? I dont think it matters as long as they're licensed physicians...what if someone with an MD ends up messing up the procedure and a DO steps in and saves ur life? Would ur views change then or still keep ur MD prejudice?

Thank you for your wisdom. Some of the other people on this board really do scare me at times.

For the rest of you, I was talking about being treated by DO's when the choice is not yours and how you would react. I didn't say DO's were not good. I personally know a respected DO cardiologist but if I were to see them for anything heart-related, it would be my choice because I already know about their reputation and they have a proven record.

When you end up the ER, I hope you ask your doctor what his MCAT score was. If it is below a 30, you will probably die.

I've worked in an ER, a regional trauma center, for over two years. In this ER about 1/3 of the physicians are DO. They also have "URM" docs, a caribbean MD doc, PAs (run trauma services), and NPs (run fast-track). IMHO, the best doc in the whole department is a DO.

But in all my time there I have never, ever, ever, ever heard a single conversation about any of that. The MDs=DOs, and NPs/PAs understand what their role is, and what it is not, and perform outstandingly. End of story. In the real world, everyone works together to provide extraordinary patient care, and that's all they think about.

I know this will shock many of you, but the Caribbean MD is better IMO than half of the other, USA, MDs.
