Hey guys....a possible wannabe pedo over here! Anyone else out there?

Im gonna be starting to volunteer in my school's pedo clinics on Friday and will also be working at a pedo office down the street from where I live. Im pretty damn excited to work with some nice screaming/crying punk kids!!! :hardy:

I just wanted to know....for pedo residencies, what month or time of the year do they usually start???

I'll be doing pedo here, a 3rd year at UNC, residencies start at the end of the summer, july-ish.

So if I do go into Pedo, I'd be doing my residency right after I graduate? Are there any January entry residencies?

Yes if you went right out of class, you would basically have a month off. Just about every program i've seen starts July 1st. Check this link if you would like to see for every different residency.

Of course, you can always take a year or two off, something I'm considering. In fact, it often increases your chances for acceptance.

what are u planning on doing for your years off?

The reason Im asking is that I wanna do at least 6 months working in dental public health overseas with children, but I dont want to waste a year, because Im gonna have a debt to pay back....

If I do end up taking time off I will most likely associate in a general practice to make some money back to pay off some loans. I'd say I'm 70/30 leaning towards going right in, but the prospect of making 100,000+ for a year or two is enticing.

Are you guys planning on having kids? Just curious 😉

That is very noble, then. Personally, I couldn?t work with children all day and then come home and try to raise a family. I haven?t had a lot of exposure to peds (just some shadowing), but I have the utmost respect for pedos. Unfortunately I?m not patient enough to become one. Best of luck with your journey, be sure to keep us updated.

CHeers....the reason Im working in the pedo clinics now is so I can find out if I am capable of working with kids all day....I have always been good at working WITH kids...just gotta see if Im good working ON kids....I worked last year in Mexico City at a dental public health clinic with kids and disabled people, and they were very very tough to deal with, but I think i can do it and am pretty confident that I can constantly surround my life with immature little snotballs because I just cant wait till the future wifey $hits out the first one!!

Where in Mexico City did you work...was it a public clinic or one of the government run hospitals. I too was in Mexico this summer, spent 1 week in the DF and 3 weeks in an orphanage in Miacatlan (close to Cuernavaca). I was with a group of students from my school.

I was in DF...it was a public clinic...my friend's parents are both dentists, and her mom is a public health pediatric dentist, so I just tagged along...it was cool and something that Im definitely gonna do in the future....pedo or not!

BY the way, I know peds is getting quite hard to match, but what are realistic stats for residencies these days????

So you think you are or would like to do pedo eh? As you can see I go to Temple as well and that is the road I am looking to travel down. Tell me about this DMD/MPH program at our school, I have never heard of it ever. You working for Bresler? Word of advice, don't be the guy with tunnel vision and miss out on everything else there is to do and see and experience with school and other classes. You miss out if you act like that and I have seen soo many in my class be narrow minded. I know a good bit about pedo programs in the city here and stuff, so you can ask me stuff if you have questions and i will try to anwser them.......Whitaker's test wake you up today or was Histo the wake-up call. You'll get through. Later

Hello Bad Vibes,

Would you mind sharing some information about your DDS/ MPH program? What are the requirements for the degree and will you be able to satisfy these within four years? How do you balance both curricula in your schedule? Are you doing research? Thanks and best of luck to you.

Easy there bud....I dont have tunnel vision, but I definitely think pedo is for me...but that is why Im trying to get a lot of experience in it, so I can just clarify that it indeed is the profession for me and if I can handle it....whereas other people who want to do Oral Surgery or Ortho know squat about it...

About the DMD/MPH, this is the first year its starting....

The requirements for the degree is about one extra class a semester...and yes, they schedule it so you can finish in it in 4 years...

Perhaps Im not the best person to asnwer your question yet, because I dont actually start the degree until January...Im still a freshmen...

Bad vibes,
Any reason you decided to get a MPH? I think public health is interesting, but don?t see the practical value of having an advanced degree??

The practical value of an advanced degree is dependent on the motivation of the one holding it. An MPH may be very useful in the future for the purpose of working in dental industry, academics, professional consultant, public health etc..
