If you're truly gung-ho about wilderness medicine, Stanford probably has the strongest wilderness medicine exposure you can find. Paul Auerbach, Eric Weiss, and Robert Norris are just a few names there that come to mind, all of whom are national leaders in wilderness medicine. Stanford is one of the only places I know of that offers a fellowship in wilderness medicine. I know they have a flight program, but I'm not sure how strong the resident involvement is.
UCSF Fresno also has a nice wilderness medicine niche. The residents there train the "park medics" at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and participate in drills/training there.
What kind of reputation does Stanford have in EM? I've only met 1 former grads from Stanford and he was a complete idiot. Still wearing his "Stanford" coat working in a small level III community ER and his patient's hated him. Another amazing attending I know went down there to visit or discuss the planning of their new peds ED and said their ER was a crap hole and they were very cocky, refusing to listen to her advice about the challenges and solutions she experienced when developing the new peds ED where she was. Thus, I haven't added them to my list.
Fresno is on my list, i just forgot to put it in.
Thanks for the advice.
