Dear Foreign Dentists:

Do you mind sharing some of your information:

1) What country are you from
2) Why do you find practicing in US more attractive
3) What was your dental education like in your country
4) How are dentists viewed in your country (for example, dentists are highly regarded and respected in the US)

I thought maybe we can use this thread to learn about our foreign colleagues that wish to apply to our schools.

I look forward to learn more about your experiences and you as an applicant.

very interesting thread Yah-E!

1)I am from India.
2)Well in my case Yah -E, I am just pursueing my career in dentistry since I am married to a software engineer and my husband is here on a long term project and I do not wish to sit at home doing nothing.I find it attractive in US simply bcoz I get to learn advanced technologies being used in dentistry and come across pple frm different ethinc backgrounds and dont forget the financial rewards!
3)Dental education in India is tough and competitive. It involves 5 yrs including one yr compulsory rotatory internship.U will graduate as Bachelor in Dental Surery{BDS}.Basically I do not know how to compare with the US Dental schools as I am yet to experience dental school life here.
4)In India Dentists are highly regarded and respected.

I find applying in US dental chools is pretty staight forward and easy provided u have the right information. But the competition in getting admitted to a dental school is tough!

Vishu:

Thank you for sharing...

BDS in India is 5 years right after high school right? So it's basically like what they have in China and Taiwan. Also, is dentistry a subdivision in medical school in India. I believe that is how China and Taiwan's dental education is structured.

See, in the U.S. after high school, a student has to do a 4-year bachelor's degree THEN another 4-year of dental school to become a dental medical doctor (DMD).

A bachelor of dental surgery in India and China is exactly how a lot of the Dental Hygiene programs are structured here in the U.S. It's a bachelor's degree.

I find it very interesting that a medical doctor (I know that they still do clinical rotations after graduation) and a dentist can be a doctor only completing a bachelor's degree.

Have you applied to any Advanced Standing programs? Are you accepted somewhere? How did you do on your board Part I?

Imagine that... 🙁

Good work, America. How high is the unemployment rate for engineers again?

education systems vary in different countries.Like a 4 yr old kid in India is able" read " and "write" atleast 2 languages and learn numbers and do basic math and is prepared to enter school!!!Isnt that interesting!

I will be going to NYU this fall .And I got 84% in ndbpart1.😱

It is high and scary .

Do you really think a Bsc or Ba is really necessary to be a dentist?
Its just a ploy to make money. Also, Highschool and Undergrad in both Canada and the US is a joke.

I think in other countries education is more intense in the early years and that a Bsc is not really necessary before dental school.

Thank you Mr Rob

Atleast there few who have better insight

The first think you can ask in order to decide the method of teaching is , if it American System Or Bristish System of Teaching...since most of the Asian countries follow British system..they are more tougher than the american system...

Like from Elementary to High school --- 12 years Excatly.
University degree---- almost all coruses 4-6 years..

The years is shorter since they omit all the unnecessary subjects like the one you take in predental..there is no such a thing in British system ,, from high school straight to Proper Dentistry.

And it more intense in clinical aspect in which you have to do one year rotation..I did mine in the military..

And the journey never end for us
