I feel like I am behind but I am not really sure so I thought I would see where everyone else is. Have you done your GREs, contacted professors you are interested in working with, asked for recommendations, started on your personal statements, etc?

For me, I have been bogged down with a thesis and because of that I have done little for the last few weeks. I have my general GRE scores, need to take the Psych still, and have contacted the professors I am interested in working with. However, I haven't asked for recommendations or started my personal statements yet. Is that bad?

Just curious where everyone is. Good luck everyone in this crazy process!

If it were Oct 1st of last year:

I would have just taken the general GREs a couple days ago, voided them and would be set to take them again in two days. (I ran out of time on math and voided it because I knew I needed a great math score to make-up for verbal....I timed it correctly the 2nd time I took it a couple days later)

Personal statment first drafts would have been done, but still a long way from the final version I sent to schools

Wouldn't have started studying for Psych GRE yet

Woudn't give my professors recommendation info for about another two weeks

Contacted some, but def not all professors

And I felt like I was prob ahead of the game. Everything turned out fine. In retrospect, I'm glad I started the statement early and worked on it for so long because I had plenty of time for several people to edit it. Also, I included a draft of my statement in the rec info I gave professors.

I'm where you are, Irish ... need to get cracking! That being said, once you have a good statement you can use most of it for all of your schools and just tweak from school to school as necessary.

well I am more behind than all of you! I have
1)taken my GRE and hated my scores
2)barely began studying for my subject test
3)have letters of rec writers in mind, but have yet to ask
4)contacted no professors
5)thought about my personal statement

I think that my GRE scores are pitiful..is anyone taking the subject test in december? or just november?

I have contacted amost half of the professors, given my letters of recommendation. Need to start working on my SOP. GRE general on 19th this month, and subject on Nov 4th. Have taken a look at the online application, filled out some of them. I HATE STUDYING FOR THE GENERAL GRE!!!!! 😡 😡 😡

Taken both GREs. Have commitments for 4 LORs, but don't actuall have them yet. Haven't filled out applications, sent GRE scores orTranscripts, or contacted potential advisors, but do have a list of schools I'd like to attend in addition to a list of feats I'd like to accomplish by the time I'm thirty. This list includes:
-Sky diving
- climb a mountain (any will do)
-find a cheap and readily-available, renewable energy source somewhere in my cubicle
- write my personal statement
-make a verifiable and accurate contribution to wikipedia(see personal statement)
-catch a video of "news" on my phone and sell it to cnn or foxnews (3 pics of a mediocre celeb will suffice, or 1 pic of Jesus on some object like a pannini sandwich)
-Ph.D.
-water my plants, they keep turning brown?
-watch Noris and Bauer fight to a stalemate
-have a catch with my dad in a corn field I turned into a baseball diamond in Iowa
-catch Bond's 756th HR
-be in a situation where I decide to cut the blue wire because it "just feels right"
-Save the day(see above)

I realize this list is short and regret that at this stage in my application process I neglected to include winning survivor, the amazing race and the jackpot on Deal... on NO DEAL! to complete the reality show trifecta. Now that all that's off my chest I'll start working on my PS and CV. Oh the accomplishments....

Personally I think you are aiming a bit low. No where on the list was winning the Nobel Prize, curing Cancer, or doing both. For these clinical programs, you really need at least that. If you can walk on water as well, you should at least be in the mix.

That is Hilarious...too bad i've already done most of those things...muah haha, they don't let you in the program if you haven't at least cured one type of cancer...now if I could just write my personal statement

well, I've successfully narrowed my schools down to 6 (for sure, each professor at each school below has stated they are accepting):
Vanderbilt, UCLA, USC, URochester, SUNY Stony Brook, UIUC

and one counseling psych (Columbia).

All have Dec 15 deadlines except USC which is Dec 1.

COMPLETED:
GRE - done (might take again if have time, but scores are not bad)
GPA - a little low (3.5), but still good (p.s. a professor told me that while updating is okay, they won't really look at your new stuff, which made me sad cuz i know my fall grades will definitely bring my GPA up)

NOT COMPLETED
SOP - i have an outline, but nothing concrete yet
LORs - i'll have packets to give to recommenders in two weeks for my Dec 1st deadline, so I'm good to go...

2 months left... why do i feel so nervous already?

GRE general - done, score 1350
GRE subject - taking 11/4 - have started studying but there is SO much to learn/know!
LORs - have asked and have 3 writers, possibly 4 - though I'm not sure about the 4th. Have completed packets and will send them on Friday
Professors - have contacted them all and finalized my list of schools (~15)
Personal Statement - looks like i'll be slaving on these from 11/4 at noon until 12/1 or 12/15 depending on the school. I just don't have time to start them yet.

I'm pretty sure i'm screwed. I can't imagine how you guys still in school are doing all of this! You definitely have my respect.

good luck to all!

I've pretty much stopped eating, sleeping, talking, and breathing all to make sure that i get my undergrad schoolwork done and my application material...but other than that everything is totally peachy 😀 😀 😀

I'm presently in a program so this doesn't apply to me. . . PTL!

I assume that everyone has waived their rights to see their LORs. Some references, however, gladly give share what they've written while others swear a solemn oath not to. How many of your professors (etc.) volunteered to show you the LOR they wrote on your behalf? Have you collected more references than is required by the school? If yes, how are you selecting which ones to send (assuming you haven't had the option to preview them)?

BTW, you shouldn't assume that you can provide more letters than are requested. Less may be more. Screening applications is a major chore for the faculty (and student assistants) and they typically don't want to have to plow through more documents than necessary. If you're tempted to provide more LORs than is required, you might first consider inquiring to see if that's OK.

I'm kind of surprised that any faculty would let you see their recommendation ... I just thought that wasn't done. In any event, I've never asked and don't plan to. I did send 1 extra rec than was required last year and plan to do so again this year. I wouldn't send like 3-4 over, but usually an extra one isn't a big deal.

if your program doesn't specifiy how they need to be sent do you just send it in a white envelope with their signature across the seal?

I had to narrow my schools down from 12 to 9. One of my recommenders said he couldn't do as many letters, so I had to cut a few schools out. That really hurt because I've had these schools picked out for at least a year. But at least he's doing letters for me at all! I'm applying to PhD programs in counseling and school psych, but one clinical program.

*Where I am in this process...well I just had a mishap with registering for the subject test. ETS claimed they didn't receive my payment, so now I'm set back and had to dig up another $130 that I don't really have to send to them today. I don't think I'll be able to take the Nov 4th test since that makes me late to register now, but I signed up for it anyway. One of my two schools that requires the subject test has a December 15th deadline, so if I have to take the December test, I might not be able to apply to that school because the scores won't be sent in time. I hope not, because it is one of my top 3 choices. Regular GREs were taken. I have not begun prepping for the subject test and probably won't until this mishap is figured out.

*I am in the process of collecting LOR from my recommenders. I have them back from 3 (out of 6) of them. A fourth recommender neglected to sign her name across the envelope flap, so I had to mail the letters back to her (and waste more postage and time) so hopefully I will get those letters back early next week.

*SOP are done. They just need to be tweaked before I apply so I can add some new things I'm doing this semester that I want to include.

*Contacting professors at the schools are done, although I did not hear from all the schools, most of them though.

*Hoping to get transcripts sent to the three schools I plan to apply to this month, within the next week. One of them has a November 15th deadline! So that's definitely the earliest deadline. I have began on the that school's application (it's online).

I had several that didn't have specific forms, so I just called the schools up. Just about all of them wanted a general letter written on official letterhead, signed and sealed across the envelope flap. Standard white envelope unless your recommender has an official envelope. I would call to be 100% sure.

I submitted 3 letters to every school and got plenty of interviews (where I also got lots of comments specifically on those letters). I figure it is better to have the application reviewers spend time on the 3 best letters than divide their limited time over more letters that aren't even necessary. Also, 2 of my reviewers gave me a copy of the letter after they were done - even though I waived my rights and never asked for it.

Now I feel really nervous! I didn't realize I was so behind!

I still have to narrow down my choices (20 -> 10-12)
I haven't written to any professors yet (will write next week)
GRE: I took them a while back (1290) but I'm not happy with them so
I will retake them 11/6.
GRE subject: I took them a while back (610) and I'm not happy with them but
I can't retake them (too late + I have to travel to another part of the country to take them, no time or money)
LOR: I've contacted profs, but I haven't prepared individual packets yet.
Still trying to decide if I should get one from my boss at work (non-psych related job).
SOP: I wrote one for a scholarship app. but it still needs lots of work.
GPA: 3.4 overall 3.5 psych Nothing I can do about em😳

On top of all this I have to go to work everyday, finish my thesis and take exams for uni next week!!
And it doesn't help that the fall season (TV) has started:laugh:

All my recommenders have given me back the letters of recommendation. I applied to my first school yesterday. It has a November 15th deadline 😱 But 1 down, 8 more to go...I also found out that one of my schools that I thought required the subject test doesn't so I can still apply to that school and get everything in before the deadline. I plan to apply to two more schools this month if I can.

Ok, finally got the SOP/PS done, hurray!!! Contacted all the profs and narrowed my choices, hurray!!! Will have the letters of Rec next week, hurray!!! Transcripts being sent out next week, hurray!! GRE scores to be sent soon, (insert "hurray!!!" here upon completion). And am now downloading applications... boring!! It'll be out of our hands soon.
